Stefanie Oakes, General Manager, Asia Pacific Services, Honeywell Building Technologies, discusses her business philosophy, investments in healthcare, and her secrets to improving productivity.
What was your most memorable achievement?
My most memorable achievement was when I led BP’s retail market entry strategy into Indonesia. Indonesia has a large population and provided significant business development opportunities with significant challenges. I was involved in the project from grassroots strategy to execution and was able to be involved in the development of the entire project.
What management philosophy do you adopt in your current position?
I am a collaborative leader and believe in encouraging my team to develop the confidence and skills to contribute new ideas and processes that improve results. You have shared responsibility and are expected to participate beyond your swimlane.
It’s also important to me to be an inclusive leader who respects differences and recognizes strengths in others. I am committed to instilling a culture of continuous improvement throughout the team. If you could go back in time and change one career decision, what would it be?
Each career experience has shaped itself in its own way, so I have no regrets about my career decisions. I’ve worked with leaders and bosses, they weren’t always my favourites, but I’ve learned valuable lessons, like the importance of resilience and team he mentality.
How do you feel at home outside the office?
My mental and physical health are both important to me, so when I’m not working, I find a balance between staying healthy and being happy. I like to stay fit by running and exercising with Peloton. My girlfriend’s 3 year old is a great distraction from her exhausting work week. She’s the perfect age to go out and have new experiences and I love trying to see the world through her eyes, also taking time to do my own things and having a nice glass of her enjoying wine
What’s your go-to productivity secret?
Engaged teams are much more productive and make the work experience more enjoyable. It’s important not to underestimate the importance of connecting with your team. Understanding their needs and ambitions helps us all understand how we can all improve and how best to work together. Take a step forward.
From a business perspective, invest in the development of aligned strategies and the tactical execution of those strategies. Spending time with all stakeholders, including managers, supervisors, and the wider team, to shape business values and goals pays off. When everyone is working towards the same mission, an environment is created in which people can thrive.
What do you see as the main areas of investment in healthcare today?
COVID-19 has changed the way the healthcare industry operates. It has become a major catalyst for innovation in healthcare. Telemedicine has become the new normal in health care, and telemedicine activities are now permanently negotiated under the Medicare benefits plan.
