Indonesia boosts South China Sea security ahead of energy project

JAKARTA — Indonesia aims to start developing oil and gas for future exports, working to secure political interests around the Natuna Islands in the South China Sea.

The Natuna Islands are within Indonesia’s exclusive economic zone. However, such developments could create tensions with China, as the waters overlap with the South China Sea, which Beijing claims under its self-proclaimed “nine-dash line.”
